Niessen & de Vries, the Dutch graphic design duo of Richard Niessen & Esther de Vries, have put together a portfolio that captures a strange but wonderful sense of composition using type. Their style focuses on the art of print and the techniques that draw the attention of graphic designers the world over, like overprinting, patterns, off-registration, large scale posters and (of course) amazing typography. While Niessen & de Vries have a very fresh feel to their work, there’s also a great sense of post-modernism by exploring the page purely for arts’ sake.

Very nice. Always a big fan of Richard Niessen. He came to my school right when I was getting into the design program, wish i would have put more value in it at the time (same thing with Weingart). I do have one of his large Chaufont posters hanging in my office at home. Love it and only wish I had the other 3 to complete the set.

This is so great! All of the patterns and use of color, it’s perfect!

Some fantastic use of colours, type and simple patterns. I really like the cutout lettering in the fourth image. Each letter has been made to look like a window but still the words still retains their legibility. The poster below this is also extremely clever. The creators have merged two words that can be read separately when the image is turned upside down. Because of the way the lines are drawn across the lettering the words can be clearly distinguished and yet harmoniously fit together as well.
