Pakistani International Airlines poster (1960)

English artist and designer, Tom Eckersley (1914-1997), created numerous posters from the 1940s to the 1980s. Eckersley’s work communicates strong messages by employing bold overlaid colors, simplified forms, and informative text.

This poster, created for Pakistan International Airlines, depicts a dapper looking gentleman in Swiss garb. His playful image is simple, clean, bright and colorful; a stark contrast from the dark turquoise background. The composition is pleasing to the eye; as the figure gazes at the distant aircraft, we too are gazing at his cheerful image. Let’s all go to Geneva!

HOT STUFF!

He is my favourite poster designer – and all of his people are always smiling

The VADs website – which has digitised the Eckersley archive – is a wonderful resource which, oddly enough, I have just blogged about this afternoon. I think there is an Eckersley hanging in the exhibition picture as well, but I can’t be sure.

this is so good. I found Tom’s works years ago on a Graphis annual from 63/65 I think, I loved his Airline series.

love it!

Wow, the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire poster is amazing.

I love this Pakistan Airlines ad. Its so clean and so crisp, so tight. But, I thought his older Guiness ad with just the man’s face and two shoes on your link, was so incredibly clever. Excellent example of less is more. Just great examples of great advertising. I think he and Otis Shepard are my favorites. Betty
