great post. it wasn’t until a few years back that I discovered there was far more to Dick Bruna’s body of work other than Miffy. here’s another good post with vintage Bruna covers: http://worldofkane.blogspot.com/2007/03/dick-bruna-b-1927.html
also, incase you don’t have it this is a great little book on Dick Bruna’s graphic design work that came out in ‘07 http://www.nijhoflee.nl/article/9789040083426/Dick-Bruna

I am a huge fan of Dick Bruna! Thank you for posting some of his great early works before his Miffy series. Bruna is VERY popular in Japan, so many of his children’s books as well as books about his own work (past & present) are readily available there.
A collection of his early book cover designs are collected in a hard to find publication called: “Zwarte Beertjes: Book Cover Designs by Dick Bruna”: http://www.flickr.com/photos/joekral/303354617/
The hard cover edition is long out of print, but a 2005 softcover edition was published by Japanese publisher, Glyph. I was able to order it online from a Tokyo bookseller: http://metrocs.jp/products/detail/488.html

I should have pointed out that you can actually buy Bruna’s earlier bookcovers from RetroBooks for 5 EUR a piece (+ a few rare posters)

Holy cats! I’ve seen some of his covers in some of my old design annuals, but I never looked any deeper - there’s so much of his work out there. This may keep me busy in procrastination-land for a little while.

in Belgium, and probably in the Netherlands too, you find loads of them in charity shops, for 50 cent/book.
Nice to collect!
I think they’re even cooler when you understand the titles…

Ah, such elemental design. I think someone needs to do a post on “How to design something great in Photoshop with no fancy filters”. The foundation of these master illustrations is solid drawing and design basics. Back to drawing! Everyday!
