Helms Workshop

Helm Workshop, an Austin, Texas based studio, does some gorgeous work. I love the variety of their poster art and typography — alongside their composition and illustrations.

I was reading On the Road recently, so the headline for the Hold Steady poster below is very much appropriate.

Those Modest Mouse posters have been an inspiration for years, awesome stuff.

If I understand, Christian Helms is actually part of The Decoder Ring here in town. Or maybe Decoder Ring is now Helms? http://thedecoderring.com/

This guy is a good artist, but he’s also a jerk.

On top of being amazing designers they are a bunch of swell folks.

Big ups to Helms and the Austin posse. Champs, all of them.

awesome!

Great work. But unfortunately I can second Elaine’s notion.

I would like to add that I do not find Christian a jerk.

I find this work extremely one dimensional. We all agree that the fifties were great, let’s evolve! When all else fails, add a star, an arrow, exclamation point, a condensed sans serif and a script, and call it a day. That’s not good design, that’s lazy and boring.

mmm… frank’s hot dogs are the best!

I think the Decoder Ring has been an inspiring for a long time. I have heard that Helms screwed over the other partners, took credit for everything and that’s why they broke up.

Christian knows design, but he has periods of “getting comfortable” and pulling from the same hat. If you have seen his work, you know what I mean. Does Frank look similar to Black Sheep Lodge which looks similar to Austin Beerworks? You betcha! Does it look trendy? Absolutely. Would you like to see Christian break out of that box, especially since he’s such an expert self-promoter that he often seems to be the only designer representing the entire city of Austin? Without a doubt.

On a side note, I agree with the negative statements made about Christian above. He is a user and top priority is himself. Too bad the design community is usually too busy brown-nosing each other to be honest about these types of people in the field. And too bad these types of people usually get to the top, no problem. I’d be a lot happier supporting designers who are respective to their colleagues and who are overall good people and good representatives for the field.

I have had a working relationship with christian in the past, and yes, he is incredibly pretentious.
