Max Dalton

Max Dalton

Love the pattern and texture in this awesome illustration from Max Dalton. Max is a Buenos Aires (by way of Barcelona, Paris, and New York), based illustrator and animator. His work reflects his diverse background nicely. I love how he’s able to capture the feeling and aesthetic of a certain time, and make it his own. And his type is super snappy.

Check his site, and his blog.

Andrew Holder: Art and Design

Andrew Holder

I really love this piece by California artist and graphic designer, Andrew Holder. The composition is fantastic and somewhat unexpected, creating an illusion of depth amidst seemingly flat geometric shapes. I especially enjoy his playfulness with color and texture. To see more of his work, visit his website andrewholder.net.

Airside 2009 Calendar

Airside Calendar

My #1 resolution for 2009 was to post a new 2009 calendar. Thank you to Airside for making it happen! Their sweet type-befriends-bird ’09 calendar is a real beauty. I love how each month is displayed and presented. It includes 27 illustrations, and is printed on recycled paper made from 100% post-consumer waste using bio-vegetable-oil-based inks. Not too shabby.

Order it! Airside blog! Airside!

Pardon My Hindi

pardon my hindi

Part blog, part store, Pardon My Hindi serves up lots of goodies like this print seen above.

After you check out the store, swing by the blog where you can see Kumar (Of Wes Anderson movie fame etc.) serve up chai the right way! Plus every friday its “dance time” where they drop a serious Bollywood gem like this. Pass the naan and get ready to get down!

What up hero? This is a must see! Heck yea!

I’m really into this tribute poster to the Shining by Tes One. I asked Tes if he could share with Grain Edit readers some of his thoughts in the making of this poster.

Tad Carpenter

Tad Carpenter

Love the variety from Kansas City designer/illustrator Tad Carpenter. His character illustrations are super imaginative and unique. It’s nice to see the range of his work as well: traditional design, installations, posters, identity, packaging, painting, and more. Lots of fun type poking out here and there as well.

In addition to his personal work Tad ropes steers at Design Ranch during the day, and co-runs Vahalla Studios, a screen printing super shop.

Vahalla recently had a gallery show. See the highlights video on Tad’s blog.

Ok We’re back. I hope everyone had a great New Years! Lets start things off with our first ever…

Conservationist of the Month:

Grain Edit reader Brad Mosher rescued this endangered Italian specimen from a stinky dumpster in an alleyway. To quote Brad, “It was beautiful, broken and smelled of rancid oil and other typical foul goo.” Way to go Brad! Great score and thanks for helping to make this planet a better place.

Andrew Bannecker

Really, really into these lovely illustrations from Andrew Bannecker. Definitely the best beer and shoe prints I’ve seen in a long time. I love how he mixes flat graphics with intricate details. His work has a nice depth to it as well, thanks in part to those great rough textures.

A few (we want more!) of his prints are available from Charming Wall.

Miyagi Typeface: Tribute to Letraset Yagi Link Double

miyagi type face

Thanks to Alex Haigh of ThinkDust for making my day. I love looking though my old 1970s/80s Letraset catalogs, so I’m really excited to see that someone has finally created a digitized version of the Yagi Link Double typeface. Alex has put in hundreds of hours to create the upper and lower case 255 character set which he calls Miyagi.

I just fired up Illustrator and gave the typeface a test drive. It looks great. This makes me want to break out the Letraset catalogs and see what other typefaces I’m missing.

Technical details: 255 character set upper and lowercase, full ascii characters, opentype format compatible with pc and mac, full manual kerning.

You can purchase the Miyagi typeface at Alex’s new foundry HypeForType
